Essential Vacation Prep at Newcastle Hair & Beauty Clinic

You all know I’ve just arrived back in the UK from an amazing vacation to visit Mama Tenenbaum on the island of Menorca and as we all do, I put in a bit of essential beauty prepping beforehand…

Here’s my guide to Essential Vacation Prep, a simple set of treatments which are vital to getting you holiday ready.  There are no luxurious facials here, just plain, simple, look good, feel great classics to get your Summer vacation of to a great start and these treatments are long lasting, requiring no maintenance during your vacation time.  Bonus.

I hit up long time Fashion Voyeur collaborator Newcastle Hair and Beauty Clinic to get started and from their menu of treatments I picked these:

1. Essie Gel Nails - Fingers £35

Gel nails, you either love ’em or hate ’em and there’s no in-between.  The pros are that they’re long lasting, chip resistant and super shiny, the cons are that they can be damaging to nails of not removed correctly and when they grow, you’re left with that bare  crescent at the cuticle as your nails grow.  Essie’s system is relatively new in terms of gel nails and it’s the brand favoured by Kate Middleton, the actual Queen, and now me, Pixie Tenenbaum, Blogger extraordinaire.  Ok, gel initiation over, I like to go for a real Summery colour my Nail Technician Gemma tells me that I ALWAYS go for the shades that nobody else chooses so I’m here to show you why these neglected shades are simply the best.

I chose Essie’s ‘Sunset For Two’ a super Summery and citrus shade of orange, I figure if I tan (I don’t), it’s going to look even more awesome.  It’s the Boxing off-season at the moment too so I’ve been able to let my nails grow #Winning.  On day 10 two of my gels had started to peel, I’m guessing this was down to the heat so rather than panic, I buffed them back a little and it was barely noticeable other than on the two tips in question.

2. Essie Gel Nails - Toes £35

Come on, you can’t do fingers and not toes right?!  I always go for gel toes on vacation, open toe shoes call for foot jewellery and metallic tattoos so it’s only fitting to throw some polish on there to make them pop.

I chose a bold, bright shade called ‘Bring Me Another’ and here’s the thing, although this isn’t actually a colour changing polish, this colour changed every day from day one, including the days that I was in the UK before I left for Menorca.  Starting off as a bright, solid shade of fuchsia pink with lots of pigment and depth of colour, it faded through coral to a soft pale orange.  Good thing or bad thing?  I’ll let you decide.  Unexpected for sure, but I actually quite liked the different looks it gave me throughout my vacation without having to paint them each time.  If you choose this shade for yourself because you adore it,  bear in mind that it won’t stay that shade for long but it stayed completely intact with no peeling.

3. Brow & Lash Tint £18.50

Absolutely essential. Fact.  I’m currently using a product to regrow my brows (I grew up in the 90’s what can I say) and although they are coming in, they’re thinner than the rest of my brows and a tint just gives the appearance of much thicker, more uniform brows, a look that I love.  I actually tint them every fortnight and I go for dark brown mixed with a little black for a custom shade.  Had I not been growing my brows in, I’d add a wax to get the shape looking slick.

My lashes are pretty good but we all get those bleached tips that look like little white dots when you get up close and they can make lashes look shorter.  A tint breathes life back into lashes making them look darker, longer and sleeker and it opens up the eyes - handy if like me, you’re pretty sleep deprived most of the time.  Plus, no mascara required for the duration of your vacation and that’s never a bad thing.  If you feel that you’re lashes are very straight and ‘disappear’ when you look at them in the mirror, you could try LVL Lashes.

4. Lycon Bikini Wax £38

If you’re not already familiar, then get familiar.  This is a wax that will change your life. Maybe….

You all know that I’m a Bikini Wax Connoisseur (it’s a thing) from my posts about struggling to find a great wax North of London but Lycon changed everything.  With a menu of ‘styles’ to choose from including Brazilian, Hollywood and Californian, Newcastle Hair & Beauty clinic have got you covered.  Personally for me it’s a Hollywood every time (yup, that’s everything off Voyeurs), and I’m regular, every eight weeks like clockwork, you could set your watch by my waxing appointments.

I don’t have to tell you why a bikini wax is Essential Holiday Prep Voyeurs, with high line bikinis and swimsuits making a comeback thanks to Kylie Jenner, there’s more and more skin on show at the beach (and beyond) these days, don’t be that person who didn’t get a wax…

So, there it is Voyeurs, my top tips to get you vacation ready without shelling out an absolute fortune.    Think of me as the Waitress Essentials of beauty, no fluffy stuff, no uber expensive treatments and nothing that requires any recovery time.  Just plain, simple, affordable staple treatments.  You’re welcome.

As soon as I hit home soil, I like to get a Microdermabrasion Facial £54 to slough off all the surface cells and get my skin in tip top condition.  I often react to using sunscreen on my face and Microdermabrasion is a great solution, after all if you tan, you want great skin to show it off right?

Lava Shell Massage

Ok Voyeurs, you know by now that I’m a fitness freak and that I don’t do things by halves.  I like to box, play roller derby and lift weights and all those crazy intense sports take their toll on my body.  If I’m not bruised and battered from boxing, then I’m grazed and bruised from playing roller derby - and that’s just the visible evidence.

I actually have a chronic condition called Fibromyalgia which has an effect on my joints and muscle groups causing widespread pain blah blah blah, it’s not interesting, nor is it something I usually discuss but I promise there’s a point to this reference and it’s kind of relevant.  Putting my body through extra stress by choosing to play sports and participate in gym classes is something I have to manage and my weapon of choice for this is massage and muscle manipulation.

IMG_7480

There’s nothing better than waking up to a major case of DOMS and knowing that you have a massage booked to work some of the stresses away.  Lately I’ve been road testing the exotically named Lava Shell Massage at Newcastle Hair and Beauty Clinic and the benefits have been immense.  The treatment has been featured in Vogue magazine having been dubbed “the new hot stones” and it was the most requested training for Beauty Therapists in 2015.

LAVA-SHELLS

My Therapist, Gemma, is small and mighty, don’t be fooled by her tiny stature, she certainly packs a punch and more over, she enjoys massage.  Gemma says there’s something satisfying about working out knots, although she tells me I’m literally the stiffest person she’s ever worked on and that I’m “like a rock”.  Gemma makes each Lava Shell massage bespoke to the individual - if there are areas which need manual manipulation she’ll work this into the treatment and then use the heat from the shells to soften the muscles.  The treatment also benefits the Therapist, reducing the risk of RSI - so, wins all round.

Similar in style to a Hot Stone massage but way less messy, Lava Shell massage is a type of heat treatment that uses smooth Tiger-striped clam shells as a massage tool.  Rather than using water to heat from the outside in as with a Hot Stone massage, the heat is produced by inserting a ‘lava gel sachet’ and ‘activator liquid’ into the shell and then sealed in order to heat from the inside out.  The heat is retained for around two hours, easily enough time to deliver an insanely good treatment.

If, like me, your muscles are harder than sheet metal, Lava Shell massage can be hugely beneficial.  Obviously the heat helps to relax tense muscles, but the shells also give off calcium ions when heated, these ions transfer to the skin and can help to firm and tone the skins appearance, not one of the published benefits, but a benefit none the less.

Skin is prepped with oil like in a regular massage and your Therapist will identify any particularly tense areas, (for me, that’s literally every inch).  The shells can be used in different orientations to give a different effect, the smooth surface is used for all over massage and transferring heat to weary muscles and the narrow edge is used to work tense shoulder blades and calves.

The great thing about this treatment is that you have the option of a focussed, tailored back massage, or a relaxing full body experience, it’s bespoke to your needs and less generic than other similar treatments.  It’s administered in a darkened, candle lit room, it’s a struggle not to fall asleep but if you can, it’s worth it as this is such a pleasant treatment.  If you’re a fan of massage, or if you’re a sports fanatic then this is one for you to try as it’s fantastic for relaxing and unwinding; I have an encapsulated shoulder and I’m trying to put off impending surgery as long as possible and I truly believe that this treatment is helping with that.  I’d highly recommend it for sports injuries or long term conditions, or just as a treat to yourself after a long day and a real bonus is that after having this treatment I sleep way better than I do on a regular night and it’s worth it just for that. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz……

Pixie x

Prices start at £28 for a Lava Shell back massage at newcastle Hair & Beauty Clinic and appointments can be booked here.

There’s a cheeky discount available for Voyeurs too, quote #FashionVoyeur or Pixie Tenenbaum when you book and you’ll score £5 off a back treatment and £10 off a full body treatment - don’t say I never give you anything! (Discount available until April 16th)

Gangsta Wrapper - Universal Contour Wrap

A little while ago you’ll remember that on the recommendation of two very high profile Victoria’s Secret Angels, I dabbled in a Universal Contour Wrap at Newcastle Hair and Beauty Clinic.  Well, after chatting to staff in the clinic I discovered a little beauty hack that might just blow your mind…..

Obviously you know that the Universal Contour Wrap is not a magic weight loss method. You’re not going to lose anything other than toxins and water, and of course reap the benefits of amazing, velvety soft skin.  But, did you know that if you combine three wraps over a course of three weeks, you could see combined total inch loss of 18 inches?!  Mind. Blown.

contour_wrap2

It’s no secret that I had a pretty crappy New Year and add to that being diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, failing my medical for my next boxing bout and just generally having done everything to excess, I was neither looking, nor feeling my best.  I booked in for a course of three Universal contour Wraps each taking place seven days apart at newcastle Hair and Beauty Clinic (who, incidentally have now seen me naked exactly the same number of times as they’ve seen me clothed).

Now, if you’ve read my earlier post about this treatment, and I’m assuming you have, you’ll know that it takes place in a warm room where you strip down to your underwear and are wrapped neck to toe in warm, clay soaked bandages before being packed into a NASA worthy space suit.  The whole process is weirdly relaxing (and now second nature to me), it’s not uncomfortable or intimidating, these girls work in beauty and trust me, they’ve seen everything and are completely unfazed by it, in fact it barely registers any more.  If you’re nervous about your body and that’s the only thing holding you back from this really great treatment, don’t be.  Step through the door, get to know the staff and trust me, you’ll be standing in your underwear chatting about the school run and what you’re planning for dinner in no time.

My particular “Wrap Girl” Kayleigh, is amazing, funny, upbeat, attentive and has a killer laugh.  She guided me through the treatment and how the course of three differs from the one off;  at your first appointment you’ll be measured pre and post wrap, you’re marked up with little points so that the measurements are taken in the exact same place.  At the second appointment there’s no measuring at all so you’re straight into the bandages and relaxing in your space suit in minimal time.  By the time the third wrap comes around on day 21, you’re measured post wrap and your inch loss is unveiled to a fanfare. (Ok, maybe there isn’t a fanfare but it’s still pretty exciting.)

Now I feel that I should add a disclaimer here, I fractured and dislocated my thumb boxing somewhere between December and January and once the injury was discovered, I was ruled out of any gym / boxing training and that included the entire three weeks that I was ‘wrapping’ meaning that I wasn’t exercising at all - something new for me having come from doing an average of nine training sessions per week.  However, I was still pretty damn shocked and delighted to discover that from first to third wrap, I had lost an incredible 15 inches globally.

Now these inches can come from any of the many measuring sites and hugely depend on where you store toxins and water.  So, for one person losing inches from their abdomen, another will lose it from their thighs and butt.  Similarly it can be lost from ankles, wrists and ribs etc. the treatment is so individual, you can never base your expected results on those of someone else.  What you can absolutely guarantee though, is an inch loss result and that guarantee, from Universal Contour Wrap themselves, is iron clad.

So, it got me thinking.  You could be overweight, injured, recovering from surgery, in need of a pick me up, or even in the case of Karlie Kloss, have the perfect body, but we’re always striving for better; and personally, I never settle for complacency.  Not the type of treatment I’d usually advocate, but this one, I believe, is a little bit special.  Like a detox from the outside in, skin is left glowing and silky smooth, a feeling which lasts for days after and that really does affect how you feel about yourself.  I have a holiday coming up in June and if I can train to get into fight ready shape and also help myself out by indulging in this treatment then goddamn it there’s nothing wrong with a helping hand!  15 inches with no training, right after new year is impressive. Fact.  Just think how that would make you feel if there was a special occasion on the horizon, Valentines Day, an Easter City Break, a Summer holiday……..

Yes, it’s not permanent but it’s visible, it’s evident and you’ll feel it in your clothes.  If it gets you through your prom / big date / wedding / *insert super important event here* and leaves your skin glowing, then it was worth it right?

So go, book up, shed your inhibitions and try it….

Lycon-1

The Best Wax in Newcastle…..

You know by now that I’m a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to waxing, particularly that of the intimate variety (Sorry if you’re reading this Dad but this is real important stuff), so when an opportunity crops up to try out a new place then provided it’s using hot wax rather than strip wax, I’m absolutely in.

I’ve favoured the “Hollywood” (that’s everything off folks) since the 90’s (talk about jumping on a beauty trend right?!) and living in London I shared my amazing Brazilian waxer with Victoria Beckham, Sienna Miller and countless other celebrities, indeed Otylia Roberts was, and still is known as one of the best hot waxers in the world.  When I relocated back to the North East this left me with a bit of an issue, largely existing as a six weekly trip to London for my fix.

Fast forward to right now and the North East is all over the Brazilian / Hollywood waxing “trend” with dedicated waxing salons opening up and existing beauty salons adding the service to their treatment menu’s.  When Newcastle Hair & Beauty Clinic invited me to  road test their Lycon Hollywood wax, they didn’t have to ask twice……

Lycon

I arrived at the clinic and was introduced to Alex, my therapist for the afternoon.  After being shown to a super cute and kitsch floral treatment room, Alex gave me instructions usually reserved for the OBGYN clinic: Undress my lower half and cover up with the towel provided.

Now for anyone new to this type of procedure, this is totally standard; you have to understand that to get a perfectly clean finish, you have to be sans underwear, it’s just that simple.  Alex is an absolute pro - she understands that clients often book this particular appointment with trepidation and she instantly makes you feel at ease.  There’s no awkwardness, it’s not uncomfortable at all, she tells me that she’s done it for so long now it’s the same as doing an eyebrow shape or a leg wax, it’s all about precision and providing the best service possible.  So far so good.

Lets pause for an interlude; the wax Alex is using today is Lycon wax.  If it’s not on your radar or already part of your beauty regimen then familiarise yourself with it because you’re going to like this one - It’s very different to traditional strip wax, where the wax is applied to the skin and a cotton strip is used to remove it, removing the very top layer of skin cells with it.  When it comes to intimate waxing, strip waxing can be tricky, the same area shouldn’t be covered twice meaning that if the hair isn’t removed in one go, you’ve got a problem….

Enter Lycon Precision Waxing.  Using only the finest resins, natural ingredients and aromatherapy oils, Lycon delivers superior performance, removing stubborn hair as short as 1mm.  The area being waxed is treated first and then the hot wax is applied directly to the hair, the wax then shrink wraps around the hair meaning that only the hair is removed and not the skin.  Once set, the wax is pulled away from the skin without the need for fabric strips, it means that large areas can be done quickly and because Lycon Hot Waxes can be re-applied to the same area many times there’s no skin trauma or irritation and I can honestly say that it’s relatively pain free.

So, back to Newcastle Hair & Beauty Clinic, as Alex gets to work, she chats the whole time about anything and everything, from tattoos to dungarees from Topshop, we could be in the line for the checkout at Tesco it’s so relaxed and within a mere twenty minutes I’m done.  On a whim I decide to have my legs and underarms waxed whilst I’m there and before long I’m smooth all over and feeling inspired to book a holiday.  There’s no stickiness or residue that’s often associated with waxing treatments and no redness so I’m good to go.

blend

If you’re a regular hot waxer, a current strip waxer or a wax virgin just looking to take the plunge then I’d highly recommend Newcastle Hair & Beauty Clinic for several reasons:  1. It’s an uber professional service, there’s no awkwardness, these girls have seen it all before and just want to make you comfortable and give you the treatment you booked in for.  2. Situated above Superdrug on Northumberland Street, it’s a central location in Newcastle city centre meaning that you can be in and out in between hitting the shops and sipping an Americano, no biggie.  3. This is the clincher: This is without doubt, the best hot wax in Newcastle, if not the North East - trust me, I’ve done the research and even had the bruises to prove it.:-/

So, if you want a piece of the action, get yourself booked in with Alex but don’t go telling everyone, it’ll be our little secret, right?

Decleor Red Island Exfoliating Ritual

As you know, I’m working with Decleor Red Island Exfoliating Ritual and just the name has me intrigued. So, here comes the science:

“The Red Island Exfoliating Ritual is an exfoliation and massage combined into one exotic body treatment. Inspired by the magical island of Madagascar, powdered Fruit Seeds of Orange and Apricot plus Essential Oils and Spices are used to polish and perfect skin, leaving it in supreme condition. A delightfully relaxing massage with warm aromatherapy oils then allows your therapist to focus on any areas of tension and stress, re-energising and restoring vitality for skin that’s beautifully nourished and exceptionally soft all over.”

Sound interesting? You’re damn right it does! I’m no stranger to an exfoliating treatment, in fact, I’m a huge fan. I know they can be messy and you can be left with those messy grains on your skin long after you’re dried and back in your clothes but the effect on your skin afterwards is so worth it. I exfoliate regularly at home and that’s great, but for me that’s more of a ‘maintenance treatment’.  Salon products are just so much better than off the shelf products bought at a drugstore or supermarket, and more importantly, they’re usually all natural and that’s certainly the case with Decleor.  Famed for their use of high quality essential oil blends and fruit products, each chosen for their respective properties to treat and ensure optimal affinity with the skin. The Red Island Ritual is an exfoliation treatment with a difference - after skin has been buffed, you’re treated to a relaxing massage using Decleor’s decadent balms and an acacia wood massage tool to ease away tension. How’s that for a bonus?

I arrive at Newcastle Beauty Clinic on a gorgeous sunny day looking forward to this treatment and as I’m undressing, it dawns on me that the salon doesn’t have a shower…

My Therapist for the afternoon is Kayleigh, bright and cheerful, Kayleigh is a pro. She’s worked in the beauty industry forever but has only been with Newcastle Hair and Beauty clinic for around four months. She’s a keen practitioner and it’s easy to see that she loves her job. There’s a moment when I’m so fixated on the shower issue that I forget whether she tells me to lie on the bed face up or down and when she re-enters the room , yep, you guessed it, I’m the wrong way up….

Down to business. Kayleigh mixes up some Decleor balm with powdered fruit seeds and the resulting compound smells divine, she massages the scrub mix over my skin in long strokes ensuring that all of the skin is covered.  Once each area is suitably exfoliated, the grains are simply brushed away. that’s my shower equation answered - There’s no need for showers or bowls of water, the seeds separate from the solution leaving the balm to do its work and skin is left smooth and grain free. Also, because the grains themselves are made up of powdered fruit seeds, there’s none of the scratchiness sometimes associated with store bought exfoliators.

Once I’m scrubbed and buffed all over, my canvas is ready for phase 2.  Kayleigh tells me that she’ll be using Decleor’s famous oils and a Decleor bespoke acacia wood massage tool. She goes on to tell me that Madagascar is intrinsic to this treatment; the fruit seeds are sourced there and the tools are handmade by locals.  Decleor plough a percentage of their profits back into the Republic for sustainability and independence.

The lights are dimmed further and Kayleigh begins the massage using the tool systematically down each side of my spine tapping carefully to the side of each vertebrae cluster. She moves my arm to lift my scapula and works to release tension in the shoulder area.  It’s certainly more of a relaxing and unwinding treatment than an invigorating sports massage and would be perfect at the end of a long day.  The tool is used all over, not just on the back and shoulders and it glides over the freshly buffed skin with ease.  Once the hour long treatment is complete, I’m given a glass of water to rehydrate and then I’m on my way.

The verdict? This is much more than a simple exfoliating treatment, the clue is in the name; it’s a ritual and it’s just as exotic as it sounds.  Skin is left glowing and smelling amazing afterwards, and the massage feels like an added bonus, it’s not often you hear the words ‘relaxing’ and ‘exfoliating’ in the same sentence.  The fact that this treatment can be administered without water and isn’t sticky is a huge draw, there’s no picking grains off your skin and clothes hours later and skin feels clean and hydrated.  If you’re prepping for a wedding or a big event, this is a great treatment to have the evening before and is bound to ensure you get a good nights sleep dreaming of the Madagascan coastline….. zzzz
