Kathryn Trueman presents Inbal Dror to the North East

This week Newcastle was treated to a very special bridal couture show, unlike anything the region has seen before and I was there to bring you the scoop….

14333582_632241220314728_281803226262619406_n

Bridal couture is big business and Israeli designer Inbal Dror has been a leader on the scene for some time, slowly amassing a following of fans who appreciate her unique craftsmanship and attention.  A skill that puts Dror one step ahead of the pack when it comes to creating standout bridal couture.  A graduate of The Shenkar Fashion Art Academy in Tel Aviv, Dror is a pioneer when it comes to couture, creating gowns that transcend the bridal genre with Beyonce opting to wear one of the standout pieces from the 2016 collection for The Grammy Awards.

With a focus on accentuating the female form by using soft, moveable materials over more traditional and thicker materials, Inbal Dror’s creations have to be seen and experienced to be believed.  Known for being a little more risqué than the average bridal designer, Dror offers something for those brides who want to feel a little more desirable.

The perfect bridal brand to collaborate with Kathryn Trueman then; Kathryn lends her name to what is probably the North East’s premier bridal boutique.  Nestled in the heart of olde worlde Morpeth with a quaint and understated shop front, an impressive boutique lies beyond with couture and more spread over two floors.  Kathryn has an unparalleled knowledge of bridal couture and can size you up in an instant.  Within five minutes of arriving she’ll have you upstairs and into a gown you never knew you needed - it’s just what she does.  With daughter in law Emily by her side, they are a formidable force on the North East bridal scene and one you need to know about.

Hence being the natural choice for the Inbal Dror Trunk Show; left with full creative control over the show, Kathryn and Emily wanted to give revellers the chance to get up close and personal with these show-stopping gowns and so came up with the idea of the #RUNFREE Trunk Show.  (That’s the official hashtag and there are some amazing pictures on social media)

I have to say I was excited about this one, I’ve had my eye on an Inbal Dror gown for a little while now (not for a wedding, just because I can).  Invites stated that guests should arrive at 6.30pm prompt at the Millennium Bridge for a “surprise pre-event” so up I rocked in my half wedding dress, baby pink boots & “Surfboard” tee, right on cue with Miss Durham GB, Taylor Hamilton as my guest for the evening.

The opening act was indeed memorable, a bridal “flash mob” arrived by stretch limousine to the Newcastle Quayside at sunset and with the sidewalk as their runway, five brides strutted to perfection while their audience was left gasping in awe.  Making their way to the centre of the Millennium Bridge - they strutted and the paparazzi followed.   At the Gateshead side, models posed for photographs at The Baltic Mill and literally walked off into the sunset.  As far as flashmobs go this was the most romantic, I fell in love with all five of those girls that night.

after moving up the The Sage, guests were treated to a champagne reception and goodie bags from my bridal publishing home, Belle Bridal before taking their place on the Frow for the show.

Exercise caution Voyeurs, you’re about to see couture so beautiful you’re going to want to down told and propose to the person closest to you….

With a live soundtrack provided by Le Sape Nocturne, a collective of eight musicians from the North East and a little further afield, these guys take infamous musical numbers from all genres and re-spin them with a little Le SAPE magic to create music you’ve never heard before, except you have.  Perfect for a bridal showcase of this calibre.

Models walked the runway in a range of styles from the Inbal Dror 2016 ‘New York’ collection which oozes glamour and decadence.  From the classic full length bridal gown to the shorter, more modern backless gown, the collection drew gasps from the crowd of press and potential brides alike.

Obvs this much concentrated gorgeousness carries a hefty price tag, but not as hefty as you might think.  With Beyonce’s (read ‘my’) gown at £8k that’s pretty affordable, and covetable, couture right there.  Sure you could pick up a car for that price but let’s face it, you won’t look as good in it as you will in this gown.

With gowns this pretty I’m considering taking on a part time second husband, or maybe two….

Dior Cruise 2016

On Monday May 11th the Fash Pack descended on the French Riviera for the unveiling of Raf Simons’ Dior cruise 2016 collection.  I’m no stranger to the Cote d’Azur, in fact you’ll find me here three times a year between the sunny shores of Monaco and Cannes, it’s pretty safe to say it’s one of my most favourite places in the world and I’d jump at any opportunity to spend more time here given the cool calmness it brings.

IMG_3295

I was particularly intrigued about this show because of the unusual venue.  Nestled high up in the hillside above Plage Juan Les Pins, not far from Cannes, Pierre Cardin’s weird and wonderful Bubble House carves an amazingly strange silhouette.  With arguably one of the best views over the Riviera, it’s not actually visible from below so remains a largely undiscovered piece of the coastline.  Known as the Palais Bulles, the terracotta palace sits within the rocks that make up the hillside and is furnished with all of Cardin’s original avant-garde pieces.

IMG_3262 IMG_3279 IMG_3285

On to the show.  Cruise is where Raf Simons really comes into his own and we get to see a real vision of the “New” Dior.  In 1947 Christian Dior was hailed as the creator of the “New Shape” as rationing came to an end and fabric restrictions were cut loose, this feels like one of those defining moments. Early evening as they sky began to darken, the perfect backdrop for the show was unveiled and the makeshift weaving runway was lit with stage lighting. strode through the grounds of the Palais Bulles wearing über feminine pieces, this feels like statement dressing for independent women.  Showcasing checks, tiny pleats and a touch of tweed, the collection oozed Dior and only stands to further compound the fact that Simons is a perfect fit with the brand.

IMG_3277 IMG_3275 IMG_3284

We also got to see accessories including scarves, some of which were carried by hand, and bags, from the iconic Lady Dior through to brand new styles adorned with rich flower motifs.

IMG_3282 IMG_4537 IMG_4551

Dior muse Marion Cotillard was in attendance and looked amazing, as good as any of the runway models in fact.  Dakota Fanning and Zoe Kravitz also graced the FROW decked out in Dior, natch.

IMG_3231 IMG_3242 IMG_3233

The Palais Bulles is quite possibly the best venue ever for a Cruise show, if there’s a location that can identify with the concept of a Cruise collection it’s absolutely the Cote d’Azur and the Bubble House is so full of character it’s almost like a living art exhibition.  I’m pretty certain that this will be one of those shows that’s referenced in years to come not only because of Simons’ creative vision but also because of the innovative venue choice and the idea of the show being packaged in its entirety and not just for the fabulous clothes.

The full collection can be viewed in the slideshow below.

Ladies Pamper Evening, As You Like It

I was invited to a Ladies Pamper Evening this week at eclectic nightspot As You Like It in Jesmond, given that it’s one of my favourite hang outs I jumped in with both feet.  As You Like It is an amazing venue set on the outskirts of Newcastle and spread over three floors, each offering a different vibe.  Quirky and cosy, AYLI claims to be “Newcastle’s most beautiful restaurant” and it’s easy to see why; attention to detail is huge here, right down to the floral wallpaper and perfectly mismatched chairs, it’s no wonder it was once voted “seventh sexiest restaurant in the world” by The Observer.

as-you-like-it-534459639

The event was held downstairs in Frangipani, a “chintz free function room” which still offers an intimate feel despite being a large space.  I worked a hard Seventies look (very Tom Ford) and I swished through the door, all leopard print blouse and vintage denim skirt still sporting straightened hair from an earlier photoshoot.  I arrived to a warm welcome and a Cherry Bomb cocktail in a vintage style jam jar glass so was already winning before the event had even begun.  The room opened out into a softly lit pop up boutique for the evening with stalls from Salisa UK, Love Niche and even Ann Summers.

IMG_1015  10944836_423875627817956_7468495888497872496_n 11150218_423875674484618_4060738410633321809_n

On the outside edge of the room, a brand called Salisa offering a selection of scarves, accessories, clothing and jewellery, all with a very Mint Velvet vibe about it.  Think sports luxe in a cool neutral palette that spans all ages.  Soft touch fabrics and gorgeous buttery soft suede bags invited clients to touch them and owner, Lisa Woodrow was on hand to talk clients through the collection and offer styling advice.  She tells me that her items are stocked in a number of boutiques and stores throughout the region but the bulk of the collection is carried in a small courtyard space just off Sidegate Gallery in Sunniside.  If easy-to-wear separates in soft muted tones are your thing, then it’s worthwhile looking into Salisa a little further.

In the centre of the space; Love Niche.  We’ve come to know and love this brand, designed by owner Nisha Vedhara, for bringing the glamour and the collection on display today doesn’t disappoint.  Nisha has brought along a super stylish selection of resort wear that wouldn’t look out of place in Monte Carlo Private beach Club, all of which are her own designs and all are equally fabulous.  There’s also a table of accessories which has all bases covered, from snake necklaces through to book style handbags and patterned scarves.  The less expensive diffusion line, Love Niche London is also available to purchase here too and is crowded with Jesmonds Fashion Set for most of the night.

11074996_423875874484598_6064440119880387905_n 11149402_423875911151261_5508093141811042239_n 11032011_423876307817888_2595119524513044671_n

Mini beauty treatments were also on hand from the girls at City Retreat, Jesmond and these consisted of head and shoulder massages, hand massages, mini manicures and more, there were also Elemis Spa products available to buy on the evening.  Further round the room were displays of beautifully decorated cupcakes for all occasions (sadly not available to eat, just to look at) and jewellery.

11133746_423876157817903_3643521104801954579_n 11101243_423876174484568_7033625132317220649_n 11102741_423876051151247_4943586084086640031_n

The evening was set up in conjunction with The Chronicle Sunshine Fund in order to raise money to provide specialised equipment to children with special needs and disabilities in the North East of England.  As a mum to a child with disabilities myself, (something i don’t talk about a great deal) I jumped at the chance to support this great event and was pleased to see that it was well supported by the women of Newcastle and that throughout the evening, the atmosphere was positive and non-waning.

thanks so much to As You Like It for inviting me, and also I must say a huge thank you to Nisha Vedhara for gifting me a gorgeous peach tulip midi skirt on the evening, I’m super grateful and absolutely love it, you’ll see me wearing it very soon!

Rising Star: Kelly Shaw London

Last Sunday saw the close of Capsule in Paris; Capsule is the premiere gathering of the finest apparel and accessories brands from around the world. More than a tradeshow, the brands who participate in Capsule make up a community that is shaping the future fashion landscape.

The FW15 Capsule collective set up shop in Tapis Rouge for three days to coincide with Paris Fashion Week and provided a platform for fresh and emerging talent to showcase their FW15 womenswear collections.  Amongst the designers presenting at Capsule was Brit Kelly Shaw who set up her womenswear label Kelly Shaw London in 2011.    Part of the Young British Designers collective, Shaw is undoubtedly one of the most innovative and exciting designers to emerge from London and her FW15 collection entitled The Liminal Journey, is testament to that.  Clearly influenced by Victoria Beckham, Shaw’s collection is made up of clean, simple lines and bold proportions.

Kelly Shaw has a close working relationship with artist Jem Doulton who creates bold oil paintings borne out of Shaw’s thoughts and ideas and these, in turn, are scanned and turned into digital prints on fabric.  For this particular collection Shaw was inspired by the process of self-transformation, complex human emotions and the paradox of good and bad, of light and dark.

A clever and original way of working this collaboration ensures that the designers personality and flair is translated into each individual piece.  Shaw is confident, her mantra is this; discover your soul, be bold, be yourself, create, rebel, revolutionise and above all, enjoy.  Each piece in her current collection depicts a quiet protest, from the slogan tees and dresses to the bold prints on delicate silk.  Shaw uses British materials and produces her collections in the UK, this is truly a girl who is proud to be British and supporting the British fashion industry.

Despite her roots being firmly in the UK, Kelly Shaw took her FW15 collection to present in Paris, why you might ask?  Well the answer to that is an interesting one and requires some background….

Producing a collection costs money.  Lots of it.  The biggest issue for a young designer fresh to the fold is having the cashflow to meet the level of supply and demand for their current collection, but to also fund the next collection and be able to present it to the masses.  This is something Shaw knows only too well and after taking to the streets during London Fashion Week SS15 in September 2014 with the Occupy movement to protest against the fashion industry’s lack of support for British designers showing at London Fashion Week, Shaw set up a crowd funding project in order to present her FW15 main line collection offering up personal notes, collection pieces, drawings and whatever she could to those who contributed in order to draw attention and backing for the project, and it worked.  Shaw raised the full capital amount required to show her collection during arguably the most prolific event of Fashion Month; Paris Fashion Week.

Fast forward to March 2015 and Kelly Shaw has packed up her collection and her team and travelled to Paris to show her collection at Tapis Rouge, an amazing venue in the centre of Paris steeped in history and a fantastic place to present a fashion collection.  Shaw’s star is rising and Paris may just send her stellar, Kanye West was spotted browsing and as we know, anything Kanye gives the seal of approval has a tendency to skyrocket.

If you’re a fan of British design and British fashion this is one designer you should back; Kelly Shaw has real talent, with a knack for knockout simplicity and a “fuck you” attitude to conforming, Shaw is not afraid to push the boundaries or to challenge proportions.  Edgar Allen Poe once said “There is no exquisite beauty without some strangeness in the proportion” and Shaw’s designs are the very definition of this, with each collection she comes more into her own and with The Liminal Journey I think she’s found her niche.

Prices for the Kelly Shaw London FW15 collection start at a very reasonable £65 for a slogan tee up to £550 for an evening dress and that divine British mohair coat that so many of you have asked about is £1200.

Fashion Voyeur and Kelly Shaw London have teamed up to offer readers a fantastic 20% discount on pieces from the FW15 collection if ordered before March 30th 2015.  This is an exclusive offer not available anywhere else and the collection is not currently available to purchase so you’ll be amongst the first to get your hands on it when it drops in August 2015 for the FW15 season.

To order at the discounted price simply:

  1. Browse the full collection in the gallery at the bottom of the post
  2. Choose your favourite piece(s)
  3. Email kelly@kellyshaw.co.uk to place your order quoting Fashion Voyeur for your exclusive 20% discount
  4. Sit back and gloat knowing you’re amongst the first to pre-order the Kelly Shaw London FW15 collection and that you got it at a knockout price

Top of my shopping list from this collection:

I absolutely have to have the grey Cloud type dress, (I feel that it will improve my life exponentially & it absolutely will as I’ve already ordered it) and the oversized slogan sweat speaks for itself.  The trend for co-ord dressing shows no signs of abating and this two piece with the mix of print and proportion is absolute perfection.  Lastly the British mohair coat, just look at it, it’s a thing of beauty and in the midst of a British Winter we all need something beautiful!

To find out more visit http://www.kellyshaw.co.uk, the FW15 collection will be available from August 2015 via the Young British Designers website at: http://www.youngbritishdesigners.com/designers/arising/kelly-shaw/ or you can currently shop the SS15 collection via the same website.

Here’s the full Liminal Journey collection, pick out your favourite pieces, take advantage of the fantastic discount offer, and circle August in your diaries.

Milan Fashion Week: The Round Up

After a whirlwind week and a marathon of running around all over Milan, MFW is over leaving behind it a trail of destruction in the shape of confetti, broken heels and blistered feet but man, was it worth it….

This season we’ve had the rollercoaster at philipp Plein; (no really, there was a roller coaster…) and lots of belted shaggy fur,

IMG_0393 IMG_0404 IMG_0405 IMG_0407 IMG_0449 IMG_0447

We were introduced to a new aesthetic at Gucci with Alessandro Michele’s debut for the design house, it’s a collection which has received mixed reviews mainly because of Alessandro’s departure from expectation and from the roots of the brand.

IMG_0366 IMG_0379 IMG_0382 IMG_0384 IMG_0389 IMG_0385

Fendi FW15 gave us our first glimpse of “Puffa Chic” and a heavy dose of 70’s inspired style in a classic Fall colour palette and a whole host of Supermodel faces,

IMG_0453 IMG_0461 IMG_0464 IMG_0478 IMG_0476 IMG_0477

Prada delivered a modern twist on Forties style power dressing in an array of candy colours,

IMG_0486 IMG_0487 IMG_0489 IMG_0504 IMG_0507 IMG_0508

Roberto Cavalli FW15 brought with it the brands signature floaty, ethereal gowns and trademark animal print blended with beautiful bright colours; not unexpected or earth shattering but pleasant nonetheless.

IMG_0674 IMG_0684 IMG_0783 IMG_0785 IMG_0781 IMG_0841

But the real stars of Milan Fashion Week #FW15 were undoubtedly the Italian giants themselves, Versace, Moschino and Dolce & Gabbana.  First up came Jeremy Scott’s most recent turn, and quite possibly his best yet, for Moschino.  With a heavy dose of 90’s nostalgia we were treated to Looney Tunes sweater dresses (I’ll take two), denim and gold patchwork, more “Puffa chic” this time with a distinct street vibe, and delicate gowns emblazoned with graffiti.

IMG_0530 IMG_0526 IMG_0538 IMG_0534 IMG_0531 IMG_0523

Versace was simple and effective, the show opened with bold and glorious primary colour blocking from head to foot followed by hella logos and motifs with a clear 90’s influence,

IMG_0604 IMG_1800 IMG_0595 IMG_0623 IMG_0608 IMG_0591

And then there was Dolce & Gabbana and all was right with the world.  always a crowd please this show was an ode to motherhood and a tribute to mothers the world over, Mothers Day came early in Italy with model mammas and their offspring taking to the runway to huge applause.  There was a genuine show of emotion when the curtain went back and the backdrop was revealed.  That’s before we even get to THOSE gem encrusted headphones…

IMG_0754 IMG_0759 IMG_0729 IMG_0728 IMG_0844 IMG_0891

So whoever you’re supporting or championing in the fashion world, you can’t deny that FW15 at Milan Fashion Week has been diverse.  After a relatively weak New York Fashion Week and a pretty safe London Fashion Week we’ve had a welcome injection of energy and passion from MFW.  So what if i have blisters and i’ve barely slept for the past three weeks?  It’s all been worth it and blisters heal right? Pass the Compeed,

Your move Paris….

Dolce & Gabbana: Viva La Mamma

Here it is, the main event, the one you’ve all been waiting for……

Dolce & Gabbana are undoubtedly the Godfathers of Milan Fashion Week and every season I wait with bated breath to see what they’ll deliver.  FW15 came with a pleasant twist, the show was a celebration of motherhood and opened to a backdrop of model mammas dressed in black silk slip dresses with their own impeccably behaved babies and toddlers held close.

IMG_0711

Heavily pregnant model Bianca Balti walked in a bump hugging nude dress to a huge round of applause, the design duo had the audience onside from the moment the curtains opened and the message was clear, love your mamma!

IMG_0715 IMG_0710 IMG_0708

Models took to the runway with their toddlers and babies wearing matching outfits and looking proud, the whole show was a spectacle and audience members applauded throughout.

IMG_0754 IMG_0722 IMG_0774 IMG_0779

The red rose was recurrent and prominent throughout the collection, displayed in many different ways on different garments, this will be the motif that identifies the FW15 collection.

IMG_0756 IMG_0755 IMG_0746

One of the things that I really love about Dolce & Gabbana is their ability to stand out from the crowd, whilst staying true to their roots.  The collection was made up of staple dresses in the shape now synonymous with Dolce & Gabbana, forties style suiting, fit and flare coats, Mary-Jane pumps, Sicilian lace, all in a signature colour palette of black, red, cream and gold, and all things we’ve come to expect from Dolce & Gabbana, but fresh and original every season. Models wore the obligatory Dolce & Gabbana crown but this time with the addition of jewelled headphones (other fashion houses have done it so why not Dolce & Gabbana?) which were plugged into iPhones in bespoke jewelled cases.

And as we know, the devil’s in the detail,

To close, models were sent down the runway in white gowns adorned with colourful drawings by the nieces and nephews of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, a touch which drew emotional gasps from the audience and a fitting end to a truly uplifting show and a tribute to mothers everywhere

This show was a real gem and was everything you would expect from Dolce and Gabbana, dramatic, emotional and passionate.  Italians are famous for their adoration of their mothers and this show was testament to that, the hashtags #DGMamma and #DGFamily sent social media into a frenzy and the message to take home from this?  Viva La Mamma! But please, one thing to note, when it comes to accessories (and Dolce and Gabbana do a mean line in accessories #JustSaying) a baby is for life, not just for Fashion Week.
