Get NRG to Beach Brawl

You all know by now that I joined a roller derby league in my home town of Newcastle, aptly named Newcastle Roller Girls (NRG for short, natch) and you probably also know that roller derby is freaking awesome.

Our league is big and beautiful, with around 80 skaters on the books, an A Team, a B team and a full competitive Intraleague of skaters, we’re a proper professional outfit innit.

Now here’s where it gets serious, our A Team, The Canny Belters are so goddamn aces at what they do, in order to up their game as it were, they need to head out to the States, face some stiff competition and hopefully bring home some hardware.

For the first time ever, Newcastle Roller Girls will be sending the A Team Stateside to compete at the fantastically named Beach Brawl.  The tournament takes place in my old stomping ground, Miami, Florida May 13th - 15th 2016 and in order to get them there, we need your help……

I know how amazing you all are at getting behind local causes and given the success of the national #ThisGirlCan campaign, I also know you know a golden opportunity when you see one.  I’d love for you to back the Newcastle Roller Girls on their latest mission and get behind their latest campaign to raise funds for Beach Brawl (sounds better the more you say it).

So, what do we need?  Well, in short we need £15,400 to cover all costs associated with getting our gals to this international event.  You may or may not know that roller derby is run on a volunteer-non-profit basis so we need as much help as possible.  Although skaters will each make a contribution towards their travel, we want to send our strongest team to Beach Brawl.  This means selecting based on athletic ability and not excluding talented skaters due to financial constraints.  We want to take the best team, not the richest team.  That means raising funds together as a team, and this Go Fund Me campaign is just one part of our Beach Brawl fundraising activities.

We’ve set up a Go Fund Me page where you can learn more about our team, their achievements and more importantly, what we’ll give you if you donate to our super worthy cause incase the overwhelming send of pride isn’t enough.

So, do it for the love of the game, for the feeling you get from supporting your home team, or because you see an opportunity to open some doors for a great group of girls, but please, just do it.  For me.

Dermaroller Vs Laser Skin Treatment: A Guide

Can Dermaroller Do Everything Lasers Can Do?

With so many skin treatments on the beauty market these days, it’s hard to decipher which one is best for your skin type, and whether the benefits are real, or just hype. Short of resorting to surgery, there are a select few procedures which are known to make a difference to the regeneration rate of our skin, which in turn improves the opinion and as you might expect, with names like “Dermaroller” and “Laser Resurfacing” these treatments can sound very high tech if not a little scary….

So, the question of whether to have Dermaroller (micro-needling) treatment or a laser procedure is one you may or may not have been pondering, if you’re looking to try to improve your skin and aren’t sure which treatment to choose, let me break it down for you. It can be really hard to choose between the two, especially if you don’t know what their capabilities and limitations are. So, can Dermaroller do everything lasers can do?

The Short Answer is No, it Can’t
Here comes the science: It’s important to understand that Dermaroller is a single type of treatment. It involves having a hand-held roller tool covered in small needles rolled over your skin, eek! Sounds barbaric right? Wrong, It’s actually not half as bad as it sounds.
The intention is for the micro-needling process to damage your skin just enough that your body will start to defend itself by fixing not only the new holes created by the needles, but whatever existing skin problems you may have had, fine lines and wrinkles included.

Laser treatments, on the other hand, can come in a variety of forms. Each type of laser serves a different purpose. Combine that with their pinpoint accuracy, and you have a recipe for treating a huge variety of skin problems. For example, ablative laser devices don’t drill columns in the skin like Dermaroller needles. Instead, they act in a similar way to a chemical peel, getting rid of the top layer of skin, which is mostly made up of dead cells anyway, think of it as a super powered vacuum cleaner unveiling fresh, new skin underneath.

Fraxel Laser Treatment and Dermaroller Treatment Create Very Similar Results
Even so, there are certain forms of aesthetic laser equipment that do drill those holes, similarly to how Dermaroller treatments do, but without needles. Instead, they use focus beams of light and heat. They are called Fraxel laser treatments, yes, we’re getting technical but bear with me…

So, why is it that some people prefer Dermaroller?
Given the fact that many people are afraid of needles and the fact that lasers are so versatile, you’re probably wondering why people choose Dermaroller at all. The answer to that is that the best treatment depends on more than just how the treatments work.

Every person’s skin is different, and everyone deals with multiple skin issues. Those can include dark spots, flaky patches, acne scars, dry skin, oily skin, etc. So, even if you want to treat a specific issue, such as fine lines and wrinkles, you always have to consider the bigger picture before making such a big decision.

Laser Treatments Do Have Their Limitations
Although they might seem like the perfect fix for everything, laser treatments do have limits. For instance, many of them work better on light coloured skin, although there are some which work on darker skin tones. So, if you are thinking about laser therapy, you need to be sure that you’re picking one that’s right for your skin tone. Something to be mindful of is that oily skin can sometimes react badly to laser treatment, as could certain other skin conditions. (There are contra-indications to any beauty treatment Voyeurs!)

Always Consult an Expert Before Deciding
It sounds obvious but do your research.  Not only can an expert help you to choose between Dermaroller and laser treatments, but they can also tell you about options you may not have considered.  Whether it’s sound wave therapy, chemical peels, or Botox injections, it’s important, and certainly relevant to discuss all of the choices available to you before you settle on one skincare method in particular.  That way you can increase your odds of making your skin look healthy again, feel confident about its appearance and be certain that you made the right decision.

So Voyeurs, now you’ve done the research, you can make an informed decision about which skin treatment is best for you personally.

I Need Your Vote! #ThisGirlCan Awards

If you follow me then you’ll know that I’m an Ambassador for the #ThisGirlCan initiative in Newcastle.  having been involved in sport both competitively and recreationally from an early age, I’m proud to be a spokesperson for the initiative in supporting women into sport regardless of their appearance or ability.

Anyone who knows me in real life knows that the last few years have been a bit of a rollercoaster in terms of health and after finally having major surgery (not without its complications) last July, I used fitness as a rehabilitative measure and have continued to do so citing it as my escapism.  I also have a disabled child whom I try to keep as active as possible in order for him to have the same childhood experiences as other children - something I very rarely talk about.  It’s fair to say that fitness and sport are a huge part of my life.

It is now one year since the Sport England, This Girl Can campaign was launched.  This Girl Can aims to address the gender gap between males and females with 1.73 million less females taking part in sport and physical activity.  To acknowledge the success of the campaign, Active Newcastle are hosting an Awards Ceremony taking place at 7pm Saturday March 5th 2016.  The awards will recognise and reward the achievements of women from the North East who are representing their sport or activity, of which I am one!

There are several categories in which you can cast your vote, I’m up for the award of ‘Ambassador of the Year’ and also ‘Commitment to #ThisGirlCan’, and my Roller Derby Team, Newcastle Roller Girls are up for ‘Club / Group of the Year’ - I’d absolutely love it if you’d show your support by voting for us in these categories.

Now the important bit: To nominate / vote contact kerry.nesbitt@newcastle.gov.uk  by Friday 19th February with your nomination and reasons along with the category in which you wish to nominate and the results will be announced at the awards ceremony on March 5th.

This Girl Can

It’s no secret that I’m into health, fitness and sport in a big way, I’ve was brought up on sport and being active and throughout my school life, if I wasn’t rowing in the National Championships, I was throwing a javelin for the County Athletics Team.

I’ve always been competitive and I’ve always enjoyed sport, even now as an adult, competitive boxing, roller derby and weight lifting are my weapons of choice when it comes to sport and an active lifestyle and I train fiercely, as often as I can.

My profile, love of sport and being active, have allowed me the privilege of taking part in an amazing campaign which I’m firmly backing, and if you’re reading this then you should absolutely get behind This Girl Can too.

No doubt you’ve seen the commercials on TV, the billboards, or maybe you’ve seen the #ThisGirlCan hashtag on various social media platforms, if you haven’t then you really should check it out, and here’s why….

This Girl Can is a national campaign developed by Sport England and a wide range of partnership organisations. It’s a celebration of active women up and down the country who are doing their thing no matter how well they do it, how they look or even how red their face gets.

This Girl Can is more than a campaign, it’s a movement.  It’s a celebration of women in sport and fitness no matter what their shape, size, level of competition or age.  This, Voyeurs, is about getting in the game, getting active and getting your sweat on regardless of absolutely anything else.

I’m super psyched to be a part of the campaign and an Ambassador for This Girl Can, with a hectic lifestyle, sport gives me much needed headspace, something that’s incredibly important to me.  More over, I’m ecstatic to reveal my campaign poster!

So, if you want to get involved, check out the website, pick up the #ThisGirlCan hashtag on Twitter and Instagram and share your stories.  If you’re looking for a new activity then the website is packed with suggestions for indoor and outdoor sports depending on your goals and has a handy guide on cost / equipment required etc.  you can also make your own #ThisGirlCan poster and share it across social media platforms with your friends and family.

So, what are you waiting for?  Get up, get active, get sweaty and share your story with #ThisGirlCan.

Gangsta Wrapper - Universal Contour Wrap

A little while ago you’ll remember that on the recommendation of two very high profile Victoria’s Secret Angels, I dabbled in a Universal Contour Wrap at Newcastle Hair and Beauty Clinic.  Well, after chatting to staff in the clinic I discovered a little beauty hack that might just blow your mind…..

Obviously you know that the Universal Contour Wrap is not a magic weight loss method. You’re not going to lose anything other than toxins and water, and of course reap the benefits of amazing, velvety soft skin.  But, did you know that if you combine three wraps over a course of three weeks, you could see combined total inch loss of 18 inches?!  Mind. Blown.

contour_wrap2

It’s no secret that I had a pretty crappy New Year and add to that being diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, failing my medical for my next boxing bout and just generally having done everything to excess, I was neither looking, nor feeling my best.  I booked in for a course of three Universal contour Wraps each taking place seven days apart at newcastle Hair and Beauty Clinic (who, incidentally have now seen me naked exactly the same number of times as they’ve seen me clothed).

Now, if you’ve read my earlier post about this treatment, and I’m assuming you have, you’ll know that it takes place in a warm room where you strip down to your underwear and are wrapped neck to toe in warm, clay soaked bandages before being packed into a NASA worthy space suit.  The whole process is weirdly relaxing (and now second nature to me), it’s not uncomfortable or intimidating, these girls work in beauty and trust me, they’ve seen everything and are completely unfazed by it, in fact it barely registers any more.  If you’re nervous about your body and that’s the only thing holding you back from this really great treatment, don’t be.  Step through the door, get to know the staff and trust me, you’ll be standing in your underwear chatting about the school run and what you’re planning for dinner in no time.

My particular “Wrap Girl” Kayleigh, is amazing, funny, upbeat, attentive and has a killer laugh.  She guided me through the treatment and how the course of three differs from the one off;  at your first appointment you’ll be measured pre and post wrap, you’re marked up with little points so that the measurements are taken in the exact same place.  At the second appointment there’s no measuring at all so you’re straight into the bandages and relaxing in your space suit in minimal time.  By the time the third wrap comes around on day 21, you’re measured post wrap and your inch loss is unveiled to a fanfare. (Ok, maybe there isn’t a fanfare but it’s still pretty exciting.)

Now I feel that I should add a disclaimer here, I fractured and dislocated my thumb boxing somewhere between December and January and once the injury was discovered, I was ruled out of any gym / boxing training and that included the entire three weeks that I was ‘wrapping’ meaning that I wasn’t exercising at all - something new for me having come from doing an average of nine training sessions per week.  However, I was still pretty damn shocked and delighted to discover that from first to third wrap, I had lost an incredible 15 inches globally.

Now these inches can come from any of the many measuring sites and hugely depend on where you store toxins and water.  So, for one person losing inches from their abdomen, another will lose it from their thighs and butt.  Similarly it can be lost from ankles, wrists and ribs etc. the treatment is so individual, you can never base your expected results on those of someone else.  What you can absolutely guarantee though, is an inch loss result and that guarantee, from Universal Contour Wrap themselves, is iron clad.

So, it got me thinking.  You could be overweight, injured, recovering from surgery, in need of a pick me up, or even in the case of Karlie Kloss, have the perfect body, but we’re always striving for better; and personally, I never settle for complacency.  Not the type of treatment I’d usually advocate, but this one, I believe, is a little bit special.  Like a detox from the outside in, skin is left glowing and silky smooth, a feeling which lasts for days after and that really does affect how you feel about yourself.  I have a holiday coming up in June and if I can train to get into fight ready shape and also help myself out by indulging in this treatment then goddamn it there’s nothing wrong with a helping hand!  15 inches with no training, right after new year is impressive. Fact.  Just think how that would make you feel if there was a special occasion on the horizon, Valentines Day, an Easter City Break, a Summer holiday……..

Yes, it’s not permanent but it’s visible, it’s evident and you’ll feel it in your clothes.  If it gets you through your prom / big date / wedding / *insert super important event here* and leaves your skin glowing, then it was worth it right?

So go, book up, shed your inhibitions and try it….
